Rovinj in Autumn: Truffles, Empty Beaches, and Golden Light
Summer Rovinj is gorgeous but packed — cruise ship passengers flooding the old town peninsula, beach bars at capacity, hotel rates at EUR 200+/night. Autumn Rovinj is still gorgeous. And it's yours.
Why Autumn Works
September through November is Istria's sweet spot. The Adriatic is still warm enough to swim through mid-October (22-24C in September, dropping to 18C by late October). The summer crowds thin dramatically after the first week of September. Hotel rates drop 30-50%. And the real star arrives: truffle season.
Istrian truffles — both white (October-January) and black (year-round, peaking in autumn) — rival Italian truffles at a fraction of the price. The Motovun Forest, 45 minutes from Rovinj, is ground zero. Truffle hunting excursions with trained dogs cost EUR 50-80 per person, including a truffle lunch afterward.
September: The Golden Month
Still warm (25-28C), still sunny, but the energy shifts. Beach crowds thin to a manageable level. The pine-fringed beaches at Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape Forest Park) — which are unbearable in August — become peaceful. Bring water shoes (the coast is rocky, not sandy) and a snorkel.
The old town peninsula is walkable without bumping elbows. Climb to the Church of St. Euphemia (60m bell tower, EUR 3 to climb) in late afternoon for golden hour views across the Adriatic. The islands offshore — Red Island (Crveni Otok) and St. Andrew — are visible in sharp detail.
Evening: eat at Barba Danilo on a side street away from the harbour. Fuzi pasta with truffles, EUR 14. The first truffles of the season. Istrian malvazija white wine, EUR 4/glass. The waiter knew everyone who walked past.
October: Truffle Prime Time
October is when the white truffle season peaks. Restaurants add truffle everything to their menus — truffle pasta, truffle risotto, truffle eggs, truffle honey (yes, it works). Prices remain reasonable because Istria doesn't have Alba's marketing machine. A truffle dish that costs EUR 50 in Piedmont costs EUR 18-25 in Rovinj.
The Motovun truffle hunting experience is worth the 45-minute drive. You walk through oak and hazel forest with a guide and a dog (usually a lagotto romagnolo or a trained mutt). The dog finds truffles buried 10-30cm underground. You dig them up. Then you eat them, freshly shaved over scrambled eggs at a farmhouse table. This is one of the best food experiences in Croatia.
Swimming is still possible for the brave (18-20C). More practically, October is hiking weather — the Lim Fjord (Limski Kanal), 10km north of Rovinj, has walking trails along a dramatic sea inlet that cuts 12km inland.
November: Quiet and Atmospheric
Honest assessment: November is off-season. Some restaurants close. Ferry services reduce. Rain increases. But the old town in November rain — wet cobblestones reflecting the pastel facades, empty alleys, cafe windows steaming — is atmospheric in a way that summer can't match.
The fish market at the harbour still operates year-round. Buy fresh catch and ask your accommodation to cook it (many apartments have kitchens). A kilo of fresh anchovies costs EUR 8. Home-fried with garlic and olive oil, they're better than most restaurant fish.
Hotel rates hit their lowest. Places that charge EUR 180 in August go for EUR 70-90 in November. The Lone Boutique Hotel — Rovinj's design hotel, normally EUR 250+/night — drops to EUR 120-150.
What to Do in Autumn
Truffle hunting in Motovun Forest (October-November, EUR 50-80)
Olive oil tasting — Istria produces award-winning olive oil. Chiavalon and Ipsa are top producers near Rovinj. Tastings EUR 10-15.
Hilltop town day trips — Motovun, Groznjan (artists' colony), Oprtalj, Hum (world's smallest town, population 30). Rent a car from EUR 30/day.
Rovinj fish market — daily catch, best before 10AM
Zlatni Rt forest walks — Mediterranean pine forest trails along the coast, free
Wine tasting — Istrian malvazija (white) and teran (red) at Kozlovic, Coronica, or Kabola wineries
If you're doing the Croatian coast, autumn is also ideal for Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Split without the summer madness.
